DO STARTUPS ONLY SOUND GOOD ON PAPER?
Let's face it; we've all heard about start-up success stories with people barely 3-5 years older than us becoming millionaires. We've all introspected for hours and hours, later being woken up with a tight slap to the reality called life from the fantasy land we were forming. These stories are meant to be 'inspiring' and 'motivating' for the public and shows like , 'Shark Tank India' are further promoting that idea by inviting entrepreneurs to share their ideas and get funding. But telecasting it on live TV has its own agendas. What good will it do for the participants? They will get publicity. What good will it do for the public? I don't know; maybe it will motivate them to get their asses up? Whilst keeping it down to make sure the show gets as much TRP as possible? C'mon, everyone knows the motivation and inspiration part is just plain bull-crap. There's no denying that. It just wants to keep people watching. It's more in the entertainment zone. But have we ever thought about what happens to the participants, the people?
Out of context, but have you ever seen any singing reality show? Like Rising Superstar or Indian Idol? Just do a quick search and look up the winners of those contests in the recent years, and tell me how many of them have made it big. Not many right? Just a couple, I'm pretty sure. Why so? Weren't they talented? For sure they were! Some were even better than their judges. Where did they lack? Ability to sustain. Two, three, four months in fame. Then just like other overnight sensations, they struggle to stay relevant.
How does this relate? Imagine being an entrepreneur like being a participant in a reality show. You may get initial success, you may think you're the next big thing. And that's good. Until your confidence shoots to high and your ambitions cross the boundary of your means and then your expectations are shattered like glass; you can glue it together buy you'll then never dare to punch higher again. And that's how it happens in real life. 99.9% of times. 0.1% is reserved for celebrities and politicians...…..
